A very simple tip but sanity saving tip for you brides planning your wedding, and especially to those brides having a budget and needing to plan a wedding on a budget. The idea here is not money saving, but to keep you organized and sane.
Along with my free wedding checklist which you can get from my website, you'll also need a day planner, a wall calendar, and the "swap space" notebook.
For your day planner and calendar, try using Google Docs and Google Calendar in addition to a pin up wall calendar.
A great day planner option is Google Docs. Google Calendar is a great calendar option too. There's no physical planner or calendar, and instead everything is online. This way it's easy for you, your betrothed, and your wedding planner if you have one to be on the same page. Everyone sees the same information, and anyone can update the document (assuming you've given them editing permission). The Google Calendar is good for this too. Schedule vendor appointments and other errands, and it appears on everyone else's calendar. And if you have a phone that can access the Google Docs and Calendar, you have your planner and calendar on the go. But also utilize an offline pin up calendar. Something you can look at instantly (without logging on) and visually see the days and dates progress.
And for my important tip, the swap space notebook. This last one is something I picked up from a computer friend.
Swap space refers to a computer's inactive memory. It's sometimes called "virtual memory" and can be thought of as a temporary holding area. Computers also have a primary memory space, called memory or RAM. They load the information for the particular task they're working on into memory and work off of that. Despite appearances, computers only do one thing at a time. This means that all the information aside from the small bit they're actively using is temporarily moved into swap space. As soon as the computer changes tasks, it recalls the information it now needs from swap space back into memory.
In some ways, people are like computers.
Even though we may think we're multi-tasking, we're actually skipping around doing one thing at a time. Whatever we're directly focused on stays in our conscious memory, just like a computer's memory. Whatever we're not directly focused on moves to our subconscious memory, like a computer's swap space.
And yet, people are not like computers (thankfully!)
Unfortunately for humans bringing back information from virtual memory is NOT a perfect skill. How often have you ever had something on the tip of your tongue? How often have you heard a tune but the name of the song escaped you? And then how often would it be that maybe two hours after the relevant conversation it comes back to you? Unfortunately for people we are not so perfect at bringing things back from our "swap space"
To avoid moments like this in your wedding planning, you need a Swap Space Notebook.
This is a simple little book that you take with you everywhere. Keep a pen with it too. Any time you think of something you have to remember for your wedding, write it down in the Notebook. Don't worry about organizing it or making it look pretty. The point is to get it down on paper so you can forget about it for the time being. You're moving your swap space from your subconscious mind to the Swap Space Notebook, and paper and pen is the fastest way to do that.
At any time you can flip back to your notebook. It may not be in order, but you have the security knowing it's in there somewhere so you can freely forget about it and not worry about it
You'll find this to be useful because inspiration strikes at any time. You never know when you'll suddenly think of the best wedding favor, the most perfect first dance song, the most entertaining game for your wedding reception, or those three important questions you want to ask the reception venue. But it'll happen, so be prepared! Write it down and keep those elusive important bits of information with you.
I hope that helps you. Stay sane and organized, and good luck with the planning!
