Using Kriya Yoga Techniques For Personal Development

By Eileen Hale

Kriya Yoga techniques are great way for a person to develop spiritually. They are slightly different from normal yoga as the techniques focus on using the source of spiritual energy that can be found in the spinal area. This may sound as if it is not a new technique, as lots of different forms of yoga focus on this area, but the majority do it indirectly. It uses certain positions to open up spinal channels which can then balance the energy in these regions. The breathing exercises help to regulate that energy.

Like most yoga techniques it has existed for a very long time. Though it fell out of favour it was rediscovered in the 19th century by Mahavatar Babaji. It is unique as it uses Pranayama or breath control in such a way as to hasten a person's spiritual development. Doing this kind of yoga will help person enter a state of extreme relaxation which has been likened to a religious experience.

This Yoga utilizes a very direct technique. This is because it teaches its practitioners to use their awareness to draw their energy up and down their spine. This yoga is most generally taught through a process of initiation so it is taught by a Kriyaban or a Kriya yogi. They teach people to practice this yoga with an open heart, sensitivity and awareness.

Part of the teaching of this yoga is that there are six spinal centres, and the energy revolves around this area in our forums and downwards directions. The six spinal centres corresponds to the signs of the Zodiac. Practitioners are taught that just a small amount of this kind of energy can be equal to 12 months of trying to develop spiritually.

Kriya is made up of four different techniques, and these are using energizing exercises, the Kriya technique, meditation and concentration. People wishing to learn this type of yoga need to be prepared to practice daily and to study hard. They will have to study the meditation techniques and also the energizing exercises.

This yoga was once widely practiced in ancient India and is to be found in Sacred Scripture. References to it can be found in the Bhagavad Gita, which is widely regarded as the most sacred Scripture to be found in Hindu religion. This Scripture is regarded by many to be an extremely important part of literature.

There are quite a few places that all of to teach you Kriya yoga techniques. Some of the techniques can be learnt by doing an online course. Others require you to go to a class. You will need to self realization fellowship lessons that will last about a year and will teach you the three basic methods of meditation. Once you have completed this phase then you will be able to be initiated in the yoga techniques.
